Iki Island is easiest from Fukuoka by jetfoil, or cheapest by ferry from Karatsu if the timing works.

Most mainland travelers reach the island from northern Kyushu, so how to get to Iki Island comes down to three gateways: Hakata Port in Fukuoka, Karatsu Higashi Port in Saga, or Nagasaki Airport. The cleanest plan for a short trip is the Hakata jetfoil, which gets you across in about 65 to 70 minutes once you are at the pier.
The cheaper sea route is the car ferry, especially from Karatsu, where the passenger fare is lower and the crossing is short. Flying is fastest in the air, but it only makes sense when your Japan route already puts you near Nagasaki Airport.
Getting To Iki Island From Fukuoka, Karatsu, And Nagasaki
Iki Island has no bridge, so every normal route uses a ferry, jetfoil, or short island flight. Fukuoka works for most visitors, Karatsu works well from Saga or Nagasaki, and Nagasaki Airport works for travelers who value speed over fare savings.
From Fukuoka, go to Hakata Port, also called Bayside Place Hakata, then take Kyushu Yusen to either Gonoura Port or Ashibe Port on Iki. From Karatsu, go to Karatsu Higashi Port and take the ferry to Indoji Port. From Nagasaki Airport, Oriental Air Bridge flies to Iki Airport in about 30 minutes on ORC aircraft sold through ORC, ANA, and JAL codeshares.
If you want to compare the main sea route before locking your dates, start with the Fukuoka crossing:
How Long Does Each Route Take?
The fastest scheduled hop is the Nagasaki Airport to Iki Airport flight, but the easiest all-around choice is usually the Hakata jetfoil from Fukuoka. The cheapest common passenger route is the Karatsu to Indoji ferry.
Use the table as a planning shortcut, then check your exact sailing or flight date before you build a tight same-day connection. Typhoons, rough seas, maintenance, and holiday schedules can all shift island transport.
| Route And Mode | Typical Time | Current Rough Cost |
|---|---|---|
| Hakata Port to Iki by jetfoil | About 65 to 70 minutes | ¥6,930 one way, about $43 |
| Hakata Port to Iki by ferry, second class | About 2 hours 10 minutes to 2 hours 20 minutes | ¥3,410 one way, about $21 |
| Hakata Port to Iki by ferry, reserved seat | About 2 hours 10 minutes to 2 hours 20 minutes | ¥4,110 one way, about $26 |
| Karatsu Higashi Port to Indoji by ferry | About 1 hour 15 minutes to 1 hour 30 minutes | ¥2,550 one way, about $16 |
| Nagasaki Airport to Iki Airport by flight | About 30 minutes in the air | ORC Sale from ¥8,580, FLEX from ¥14,520 |
| Iki to Izuhara, Tsushima by ferry | Good for island-to-island trips | ¥3,300 second class, about $21 |
| Iki to Izuhara, Tsushima by jetfoil | Faster island-to-island option | ¥6,820 one way, about $43 |
Fare math: Dollar amounts are rounded using about ¥160 to $1. Pay in yen and expect card acceptance to vary at smaller island counters.
Which Port Should You Use On Iki?
Gonoura Port is the most useful arrival point for central Iki stays, Ashibe Port is handy for the north and east side, and Indoji Port is the Karatsu ferry landing near Ishida. Iki Airport also sits in Ishida, near several beaches and quieter lodging.
Kyushu Yusen’s current April 1 to July 31, 2026 passenger fares list Hakata to Iki at ¥3,410 by second-class ferry and ¥6,930 by jetfoil on the Kyushu Yusen fare table.
- Use Gonoura Port if your stay is around central Iki, you want the widest mix of restaurants, or your lodging offers pickup there.
- Use Ashibe Port if your plan leans toward the northern coast, Harahoge Jizo, or beach time near the east side.
- Use Indoji Port if you are arriving from Karatsu or staying near Ishida, Tsutsuki Beach, or Iki Airport.
- Use Iki Airport if you are already routing through Nagasaki Airport and want the shortest crossing time.
Check the final port name before you buy, because Hakata services can land at either Gonoura or Ashibe. A hotel pickup set for the wrong port can turn a simple arrival into a long taxi ride.
Should You Fly To Iki Island?
Flying to Iki Island is worth it when you are already at Nagasaki Airport or when a 30-minute flight saves you from a long rail-and-ferry chain. Flying is not usually the simplest route from Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto, or Fukuoka because you still have to reach Nagasaki Airport first.
Nagasaki Airport’s monthly schedule lists two Nagasaki to Iki flights on many dates, with departures around morning and late afternoon in the current summer schedule. ORC’s fare page for May 19 to October 24, 2026 lists Nagasaki to Iki FLEX fares from ¥14,520 and advance ORC Sale fares from ¥8,580, with higher peak fares during August.
The flight is small-island aviation, not a wide-body airport routine. Buy early if your date is fixed, leave slack around the last flight, and avoid making a same-day international connection after the return unless you can absorb a delay.
Bringing A Car Or Renting One On Iki
Bringing a car to Iki is possible on the car ferries, but renting on the island is usually simpler for visitors who do not need their own vehicle. The ferry vehicle fare rises fast, and the driver still needs to finish boarding procedures well before departure.
For April to July 2026, Kyushu Yusen lists Hakata to Iki vehicle fare from ¥11,210 for cars under 3 meters and Karatsu to Indoji vehicle fare from ¥8,800 for cars under 3 meters. The car can make sense for families carrying beach gear or travelers linking Iki with a longer Kyushu road trip.
Drivers who prefer to pick up wheels after landing can compare island options here:
Book the smallest car that fits your group. Iki’s roads are manageable, but beach access lanes and village streets can feel narrow if you arrive with a large vehicle.
Where To Stay After You Arrive
Staying near the port or airport you use saves time on both arrival and departure days. Gonoura is the most practical base for easy meals and port access, while Ishida suits travelers focused on beaches, Iki Airport, and the Karatsu ferry.
On a one-night trip, pick lodging near your arrival point instead of chasing an island-wide circuit. On a two-night trip, Gonoura or a beach stay around Ishida gives you more room to see shrines, coast roads, and the western viewpoints without watching the clock.
Use the map view to match your lodging to Gonoura, Ashibe, Indoji, or Iki Airport before you reserve:
The Easiest Plan For Each Traveler
The right way to reach Iki Island depends on your starting point and how much schedule risk you can accept. Most visitors should choose Fukuoka’s Hakata jetfoil unless price, car access, or Nagasaki routing clearly points elsewhere.
- Pick Hakata jetfoil for speed from Fukuoka: it is the cleanest choice for a short Iki stay or a two-island trip with Tsushima.
- Pick Hakata ferry for lower cost from Fukuoka: it takes about twice as long as the jetfoil but costs much less for passengers.
- Pick Karatsu ferry for the cheapest common route: it works especially well from Saga, Nagasaki, or a Kyushu road trip.
- Pick the Nagasaki flight for the shortest crossing: it is best when your wider trip already brings you to Nagasaki Airport.
- Pick a rental car on Iki for flexible sightseeing: buses exist, but a car makes beaches, shrines, and viewpoints much easier to combine.
For a simple first visit, fly or train into Fukuoka, sleep near Hakata or Tenjin if needed, take the morning jetfoil to Iki, stay one or two nights, then return by jetfoil or ferry depending on your onward plan.
