Advance seat selection is different. Choosing a window, aisle, preferred seat, or Extra Legroom Seat does not change the cabin, meals, mileage rules, or baggage rules attached to your fare.

How Many Hours Before Departure Can You Upgrade?

EVA Air’s upgrade timing depends on the method: EVABidDeal works close to departure, while mileage upgrades can open much earlier. The safest move is to check as soon as your ticket is issued, then check again in the final week.

EVA Air says eligible passengers may receive an EVABidDeal invitation 7 days before departure and can make an offer up to 50 hours before departure on the official EVABidDeal page. EVA Air’s bid FAQ says successful passengers are normally informed by email no later than 49 hours before departure, with some manual cases handled closer to the flight.

Mileage upgrades work on a wider booking window. EVA Air’s upgrade login page says award upgrades can be requested from 360 days before departure until 3 to 7 hours before departure, depending on the route. That window is useful, but it does not guarantee inventory.

Timing rule: treat 50 hours before departure as the practical EVABidDeal cutoff and 360 days before departure as the earliest mileage-upgrade check.

Fare Classes And Bookings That Can Block An Upgrade

EVA Air upgrades are not open to every ticket, passenger, or flight. Fare class, operating airline, group size, special-service records, and prior upgrade status can all block the online path.

For mileage upgrades, EVA Air lists Y, B, M, H, and Q Economy tickets as eligible for certain international upgrade awards to Royal Laurel, Premium Laurel, or Business cabins by deducting miles. EVA Air also lists several booking classes that are not available through the online award-upgrade system, including P, V, W, G, X, N, E, U, A, O, and S.

Some traveler profiles need extra care. EVA Air’s award-upgrade system says it is not available for passengers who require assistance, unaccompanied children under 12, passengers traveling with infants, group bookings of 10 or more passengers in one booking record, and bookings that already include certain paid add-ons or an EVABidDeal upgrade.

• Charter and unscheduled flights are not treated like regular EVA Air flights.
• Infant tickets can require a fare difference if the adult ticket is upgraded.
• Airport check-in is no longer a normal place to request an award upgrade.

What Changes After A Successful EVA Air Upgrade

A successful EVA Air upgrade changes the cabin for the approved flight segment, but the original ticket rules still matter. Cancellation, refund, change, and baggage rules do not all transform into the higher cabin’s fare rules.

EVABidDeal upgrades are valid only for the passenger, date, and flight shown on the ticket. EVA Air’s bid FAQ says a successful EVABidDeal upgrade is non-transferable and non-refundable once accepted. If you later change or cancel the flight, the upgrade can be forfeited under the original fare conditions.

Seat assignment is also not a promise. EVA Air says passengers with successful bid upgrades can select a seat during online check-in, but aisle seats, sitting together, and other seat preferences are based on what remains open in the upgraded cabin.

Baggage needs a close look. EVA Air’s bid FAQ says additional baggage pieces are not included with EVABidDeal. The piece weight limit may follow the upgraded cabin on the upgraded segment, but the number of pieces remains tied to the original fare rules unless the itinerary says otherwise.

When To Compare Buying The Higher Cabin Instead

Buying the higher cabin can beat an upgrade when the bid range is high, the route is long, or the upgrade is the main reason the flight works for you. Compare the full fare before submitting a bid you cannot change later.
