These are long-term normals, so annual totals swing sharply. A city averaging three or five inches can have several nearly snowless winters, then exceed its average in one storm.
Why Snowfall Varies So Much
North Carolina snow depends on elevation, the depth of cold air, and the exact track of a storm. Small changes in temperature can turn expected snow into sleet, freezing rain, or cold rain.
The Blue Ridge and northwestern High Country are colder because of elevation, and northwest-flow moisture can produce repeated mountain snow showers after a larger storm departs. Asheville receives less snow than Boone because Asheville’s lower basin often sits warmer than surrounding ridges.
Across the Piedmont, shallow cold air may become trapped against the eastern side of the Appalachians. That setup can support snow at first, then create sleet or freezing rain as warmer air moves above the cold surface layer. Near the Atlantic, mild marine air usually favors rain, but a strong Arctic air mass paired with an offshore low can produce a rare coastal snowstorm.
What Averages Do Not Show
Snowfall in North Carolina is uneven from year to year, and one major event can distort a season. Long snow-free stretches are normal outside the mountains, yet an unusual storm can deliver several years’ worth of average snow in a day.
The 2025–26 winter showed that volatility. The North Carolina State Climate Office reported seasonal totals of 12.2 inches in Charlotte and 5.8 inches in Wilmington, both far above their 1991–2020 normals. The same season left Boone below its 25.6-inch normal before late-March totals were counted.
Snow depth also differs from snowfall. A station may record several inches falling through the day while compaction, melting, wind, or a change to rain leaves much less on the ground.
Where Snow Is Most Reliable For A Winter Trip
Boone, Banner Elk, Beech Mountain, and nearby high ridges offer the strongest natural-snow odds in North Carolina. Asheville can receive snow, but a trip there should not be planned around guaranteed accumulation.

How Likely Is Snow During Your Visit?
Snow is a reasonable expectation only for a midwinter High Country trip; elsewhere in North Carolina, treat it as a possibility rather than a trip feature. January and February give every region its strongest odds, but no date guarantees natural snowfall.
- For regular snow chances: Choose Boone, Banner Elk, or higher elevations from January through February.
- For a mountain city break: Asheville may see snow, yet rain and mild spells are common in winter.
- For Charlotte, Greensboro, or Raleigh: Build plans that work with or without snow; measurable events occur irregularly.
- For the coast: Expect little snow in a normal winter and view any accumulation as an uncommon event.
- For driving: Check the forecast and road reports within 24 hours of departure, since freezing rain can be more disruptive than snow.
For the clearest statewide rule, expect frequent winter snow in the highest northwestern mountains, occasional snow across the Piedmont, and rare snow near the coast.
