The Coast Starlight is scheduled to reach Portland at 3:56 p.m. the next day. That makes the train portion about 18 hours 15 minutes and the complete scheduled trip about 19 hours 6 minutes.

Allow extra time after arrival: long-distance Amtrak trains can lose time because of freight traffic, track work, weather, or operating problems. Avoid placing a separate flight or fixed event shortly after the scheduled Portland arrival.

The Coast Starlight is rarely the fastest choice between San Francisco and Portland. Coach can still compete on price when purchased early, while a sleeper turns the overnight ride into a more comfortable but much costlier trip.
