Which Alameda Ferry Terminal Should You Use?

The right Alameda terminal depends on where you start and whether you are traveling on a weekday or weekend. Seaplane Lagoon usually suits Alameda Point, Main Street covers the West End and weekend riders, and Harbor Bay serves Bay Farm Island.

Alameda Seaplane Lagoon

Alameda Seaplane Lagoon runs direct weekday service to downtown San Francisco in about 20 minutes. The route has morning, midday, afternoon, and evening departures under the schedule effective March 9, 2026, making it the strongest all-day weekday option from Alameda Point.

Bikes are accepted on a space-available basis, and the terminal has open-air racks plus 24 secure BikeLink lockers. The City of Alameda charges $3 for parking on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays; read the posted payment and time-limit signs before leaving the car.

Main Street Alameda

Main Street Alameda at 2990 Main Street is the only regular Alameda terminal with daily service, including Saturdays and Sundays. Some sailings run directly after serving Oakland, while others call at Oakland after Alameda, so the scheduled trip can range from roughly 20 to 40 minutes.

The main lot has limited free parking for 324 cars, with 121 more spaces in the O’Lot about a quarter-mile west. Overnight parking is not allowed.

Harbor Bay

Harbor Bay at 215 Adelphian Way is the practical terminal for Bay Farm Island. The weekday crossing takes about 25 minutes, but midday service is limited, so Harbor Bay works better for commute windows than an open-ended day in San Francisco.

Alameda To San Francisco Ferry Routes Compared

The ferry is usually the cleanest downtown connection because it avoids Bay Bridge traffic and arrives on the Embarcadero. AC Transit, BART, driving, and rideshare remain useful when the sailing schedule does not fit.

Fares, Tickets, And Boarding

Regular Alameda ferry service costs $5.10 one way for an adult, effective July 1, 2026. Eligible discount riders pay $2.50, and children younger than five ride free.

Passengers can pay with Clipper, the SF Bay Ferry app, or cash or credit card on board. Regular-route seating is first-come, first-served; reservations are used for special-event service rather than ordinary downtown trips.

SF Bay Ferry posts the daily Main Street departure times, current fare, and route notes on the official Oakland and Alameda ferry timetable. Recheck it on the day of travel, especially on holidays.

Event service: Select Oracle Park and Chase Center sailings use separate event tickets. Clipper is not accepted for those reserved trips.

How Early Should You Arrive?

Arrive 10–15 minutes before a normal departure and allow closer to 20 minutes during busy commute periods. Riders bringing bicycles or traveling with a group should leave extra time because boarding and bike space are first-come.

Use the gate shown for your exact sailing on the departure board. Downtown San Francisco commonly assigns Seaplane and Harbor Bay ferries to Gate F and Main Street Alameda service to Gate G, but operational changes can move a boat.

• From central Alameda: Compare Seaplane and Main Street by departure time; a short ride to the earlier boat may save time overall.
• From Bay Farm Island: Harbor Bay avoids crossing the island before boarding.
• Without a car: Check a same-day transit planner for AC Transit connections, since bus timing can decide which ferry is realistic.
• With a bicycle: All three terminals accept bikes aboard on a space-available basis.

Arriving In Downtown San Francisco

The Downtown San Francisco Ferry Terminal places riders on the Embarcadero at Mission Street. The Ferry Building is beside the gates, Embarcadero BART and Muni Metro are a short walk away, and the Salesforce Transit Center is about half a mile inland.

For Union Square, transfer to BART or Muni rather than walking uphill with luggage. For the waterfront, North Beach, or Pier 39, use the F Market streetcar or a local bus from the Ferry Building area.
