For trains from Osaka to Nara, the right choice depends on where you are sleeping in Osaka and what you want to do first in Nara. Kintetsu is usually the better ride from Namba because Kintetsu-Nara Station sits closer to Nara Park, Todai-ji Temple, and Kasuga Taisha. JR is better from Osaka Station, Umeda, Tennoji, or any trip where a Japan Rail Pass or JR regional pass is already in your wallet.

JR regional passes can also cover this ride when the pass area includes Osaka and Nara. That said, paying cash for a one-way Osaka–Nara train is cheap by Japan standards, so buying a pass only for this short trip rarely makes sense.
