Mount Rushmore opens well before its indoor visitor facilities, so the right arrival time depends on whether you want an early view, full visitor services, or the evening lighting program. The parking structure and memorial grounds use seasonal hours, while the Lincoln Borglum Visitor Center, Sculptor’s Studio, café, and gift shop follow separate schedules. Every time below is Mountain Time.
A 5:00 a.m. arrival works from March 10 through October 31, but most buildings do not open until 8:00 a.m. Winter visitors can enter the grounds from 6:00 a.m., and the parking area closes earlier at night.
What Opens At 5:00 A.M.?
The parking structure and outdoor memorial grounds open at 5:00 a.m. from March 10 through October 31. The Avenue of Flags and Grand View Terrace can be reached during those hours, but indoor exhibits, food service, and staffed information desks open later.
An early arrival is useful for quieter walkways and softer morning light. Summer crowds build quickly, and the National Park Service advises visiting before 9:00 a.m. or after 3:30 p.m. during June, July, and August.

Mount Rushmore Opening Hours By Season
Mount Rushmore’s outdoor grounds open earlier and close later from spring through September, while visitor buildings keep their own seasonal schedules. December 25 is the main exception: the grounds and parking may remain open if weather allows, but all buildings close.

Visitor Center, Studio, And Food Service
The Lincoln Borglum Visitor Center and Information Center open at 8:00 a.m. throughout the year, apart from their December 25 closure. Closing times range from 5:00 p.m. in the colder months to 10:00 p.m. during the main summer period.
The Sculptor’s Studio runs only from late May through September. Its short talks explain the carving tools, workers, and methods used on the memorial, so visitors arriving outside that season should rely on the visitor center exhibits and outdoor viewpoints instead.
Food and retail times shift more often than the grounds. Carvers’ Café generally starts at 8:00 or 9:00 a.m., depending on the date, while the gift shop opens at 8:00 a.m. Ice cream service begins later in the day during the warmer months.
When Should You Arrive?
The best arrival time is 8:00 a.m. for a first visit because the grounds are already open and the main visitor facilities are starting service. Photographers and travelers avoiding summer crowds should arrive when the grounds open, then return to the indoor exhibits after 8:00 a.m.
- For sunrise-style light and quiet terraces: arrive at 5:00 a.m. from March 10 through October, or 6:00 a.m. in winter.
- For exhibits and staffed help: arrive at 8:00 a.m.
- For a lighter summer crowd: enter before 9:00 a.m. or after 3:30 p.m.
- For the evening program: arrive 30–45 minutes before the listed start so there is time to park and reach the amphitheater.
Timing tip: The outdoor grounds may be open while the visitor center, café, studio, and gift shop are still closed. Plan meals, restrooms, exhibits, and ranger programs around the facility schedule rather than the gate time alone.
Staying Near Mount Rushmore
Keystone is the closest lodging base for an early opening-time arrival, while Rapid City offers a wider range of rooms and dining about 35 miles from the memorial. Staying nearby also makes it easier to return for the evening illumination without fitting both visits into one long drive.

Evening Lighting And Night Access
The evening lighting program begins at 9:00 p.m. from May 23 through August 9 and at 8:00 p.m. from August 10 through September 30. The 45-minute program ends with the sculpture illumination, which continues until 11:00 p.m.
No ranger-led evening program runs from October 1 through May 22, but the sculpture is still illuminated nightly at sunset. Illumination ends at 9:00 p.m. from October 1 through March 9 and at 11:00 p.m. from March 10 through May 22.
Evening program attendance does not require a reservation. Weather can cancel or reschedule outdoor activities, so the posted park calendar is the right last check on the day of a visit.
Parking, Entry, And Holiday Rules
Mount Rushmore does not charge an entrance fee, but most drivers pay a concession-operated parking fee. The current rate is $10 per car, motorcycle, or RV, $5 for visitors age 62 or older, and free for active-duty military members.
The America the Beautiful pass does not cover this parking charge because it is a concession fee rather than a federal entrance fee. A noncommercial parking ticket allows unlimited reentry for one year from its purchase date, which can help when returning for both daylight views and the evening lighting.
December 25 has different rules. The parking structure and grounds may open if weather permits, but the visitor center, information center, gift shop, café, and other buildings are closed. Overnight parking is not allowed on any date.
Pick The Right Arrival Time
Most first-time visitors should arrive at 8:00 a.m., when indoor facilities begin opening and summer crowds are still manageable. Arrive at the seasonal grounds opening time for quiet views, or plan a later visit around the evening program if the illuminated sculpture is the priority.
